This pattern of small, regularly spaced circles has existed since the Shosoin era.
The color is a very dark, deep indigo dye, which was called “Kachin-iro” during the Edo period. In the Kamakura period, it was associated with the word for “winning,” making it a lucky charm favored by samurai.
